What is R-454B?
EPA Regulation: Under the AIM Act, R-410A is being phased out in favor of low-GWP
(Global Warming Potential) alternatives.
R-454B is the leading replacement and is quickly becoming the standard in most new HVAC
systems starting January 1, 2025.
Type: Hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) blend refrigerant
GWP: ~466 (vs. R-410A's ~2088) → ~80% reduction
ASHRAE Classification: A2L – lower toxicity, mildly flammable
Environmental Compliance
• Aligns with federal and state sustainability mandates
• Supports ESG goals for environmentally-conscious properties
Improved Efficiency
• OEM systems with R-454B are designed for better SEER2 ratings
• Reduces overall energy consumption in newer systems
Future-Proof Investments
• Ensures new installs are compliant beyond 2025
• Enhances long-term property value and system reliability
Mild Flammability (A2L)
• Requires contractors with special handling certifications
• Installation needs updated safety protocols
Incompatibility with R-410A Systems
• Retrofit not possible – full system replacement required
• Long-term planning critical for phased replacement
Supply Chain Impacts & Cost Shifts
• Prices & availability for R-410A units and refrigerant have spiked.
• Prices for refrigerant & unit availability for R-454B is volatile.
1. Audit current HVAC inventory for R-410A equipment nearing end-of-life
2. Plan phased replacements to avoid rushed upgrades in 2025–2027
3. Partner with certified contractors (like Yeti Pro Services) for compliant installation and
maintenance
4. Budget early for system replacements and possible price changes
Current Supply: for R-454B units delivery time is currently 1-5 days
